About Pwani University

Pwani University is a public university in the Kilifi County in Kenya, located 60 km north of Mombasa in the resort town of Kilifi, within the larger Kilifi County.
Prior to the award of a Charter, the University was a Constituent College of Kenyatta University. The College formerly the Kilifi Institute of Agriculture was established on 23 August 2007 by an order signed by H.E President Mwai Kibaki.

Pwani University has the following ten major objectives to guide its quest for excellence in the next ten years. These will be reviewed from time to time so as to conform to emerging challenges and changing national needs and challenges.

  • To enhance science and technological development.
  • To fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Why study at Pwani University

Pwani University is strategically positioned, close to the Kilifi bay along the busy Mombasa-Malindi highway.
It occupies approximately 239 hectares of land part of which is currently the College Farm.
Pwani University founded on 23 August 2007, has grown and expanded its array of courses offered and general service to the community over the years.
The first group of students (about 200) was registered on 20 October 2007. They were mainly in the field of Education (Science) and Education (Arts)

Pwani University History

Pwani University began as Kilifi Institute of Agriculture in 1984 though the first intake of 200 students for the Two Year Certificate Course in Agriculture and Home Economics was in July 1987.
By 2007, Kilifi Institute of Agriculture had graduated 3,837 students. The Institute also hosted a number of Masters and PhD research students from other national universities.
On 23rd August 2007, Kilifi Institute of Agriculture was upgraded to a Constituent College of Kenyatta University, and in March 2013, it was given a charter as a full fledged University.
Pwani University is strategically placed in the heart of the Coastal region of Kenya in Kilifi Town, right on the Mombasa-Malindi Highway; and is equipped with facilities to offer quality training in Tropical Agriculture, Tropical Medicine, Marine Sciences and Education. So whether you are finishing high school, beginning university for the first time, or pursuing graduate studies, you will find a wide range of options at Pwani University.
Our University has five schools which all together offer 9 degree programmes in the Arts, Humanities, Sciences, Health and Education. The University has engaged highly qualified staff.
