Bachelor of science Geomatics Engineering and geospatial information systems - course content

Bachelor of science Geomatics Engineering and geospatial information systems at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology(JKUAT) is designed generally following these guidelines. In the first and second years of study, students cover basic sciences, social sciences and foundation courses. These include mathematics, computing, surveying techniques, cartographic techniques, applied electromagnetics, and electrical engineering principles. In the third, fourth and fifth year the core geomatic engineering subjects and subjects from interrelated disciplines are covered including Photogrammetry, Geodesy, Planning, Engineering Surveying, Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, Digital Mapping, Highway Engineering, Mining Surveying, Hydrographic Mapping, Satellite Geodesy and Research methodology. Management, entrepreneurship skills and law are covered in the fifth year.

In the fifth year of Bachelor of science Geomatics Engineering and geospatial information systems at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology(JKUAT) some fairly advanced subjects are offered as electives in the following broad groupings,

  • Geodetic Science
  • Geoinformatics
  • Engineering Surveying and Transportation Engineering
  • Real Property Management and Environment

Students in the fifth year also carry out a supervised individual project and submit a written report. The advanced topics, project and research methodology may serve as an introduction to research skills that may be useful for postgraduate studies and research or specialized work in the discipline.
