About Bachelor of Science in Human Anatomy Bachelors Degree program.

 To enable a few MBChB. Students who have completed and passed all the courses of the first and second year and have particularly distinguished themselves in those courses to acquaint themselves with more detailed Human Physiology and Anatomy.

To acquaint the selected students with modern research methods and to enable them to develop skills in some of these research methods, especially building upon their work of the first and second year courses.


To enable the selected students to obtain the Degree of Bachelor of Science as an indication of their basic potential for specializing later within the fields of Medicine, Physiology and related Biological Sciences.



General Regulations




  1. Candidates will be selected after the end of the second year of the MBChB. course.



  2. The BSc. (anatomy) course will normally be available between the second and third year of the MBChB. degree course.



  3. The course which will be on full time basis extending over three terms will consist of discussion classes, tutorials, practical and filled work with special reference to the development of skills related to conducting original investigations, the analysis of data and the preparation of papers containing original observations. Students will \ be required to present at least two comprehensive review papers per term, the nature of the paper and the precise number to be determined by the department of the Human Anatomy in consultation with the external examiner. Students will be required to undertake extensive guided reading.

Objectives of Bachelor of Science in Human Anatomy

 

The objectives of BSc. Anatomy degree course shall be as follows:


To enable a few MBChB. Students who have completed all the courses of the First and Second Year and have particularly distinguished themselves in those courses to acquaint themselves with more detailed biology of mammals, with particular emphasis on primates.


To acquaint the selected students with modern research methods and to enable them to develop skills in some of these methods specially building upon their work on the First and Second Year courses.


To enable the selected students to obtain the Degree of Bachelor of Science as an indication of their basic potential specializing later within the fields of medicine and related biological sciences.

Entry requirements for Bachelor of Science in Human Anatomy

Candidates should have completed all the courses and passed all examinations of the first and second year of the MBChB. Degree courses at the University of Nairobi or at a University recognized by the Senate of the University of Nairobi.


Successful applicants will be selected for admission to the Bsc.Hons.(Human Physiology or Anatomy) course by the senate of the University of Nairobi, acting on advice of the Board of the School of Medicine and the Academic Board of the College of Health Sciences.

Bachelor of Science in Human Anatomy Course Subjects

The course will last one academic year. The course will be on full time basis, extending for four quarters. It will consist of discussion classes, tutorial, and practicals, with special reference to the development of skills related to conducting original investigation, the analysis of data and preparation of papers containing original observations. Students will be required to present at least one comprehensive review paper per quarter. Students will be required to undertake extensive guided reading. The candidates will be expected to identify specific research project and write a short dissertation.

  • The life and environment of Primates.



  • Primate taxonomy and principles of taxonomy.



  • Primate behaviour and adaptability.



  • Primate ecology and population dynamics.



  • Primate zoonoses.



  • Outline of mammalian taxonomy and anatomical adaptations.



  • Primate ecology in outline as related to anatomy.



  • Functional anatomy of primates.



  • The integument and other epithelia (tissue-environmental barrier0).



  • Connective tissue,cartilage and bone (support).



  • Muscle (propulsion).



  • Neurons and endocrines (integration).



  • The cardiovascular system (circulation of metabolites).



  • The respiratory systems (respiration)



  • The digestive system (nutrition).



  • The urinary system (urination).



  • The reproductive system (species perpetuation and genetic basis).



  • Evolution of primates with passing reference to other mammals, including aspect antogenetic and regenerative development.



    *man is treated here as one of the primates (Physical Anthropology with a biological rather than anthropocentric bias will be an essential part of this course).
