About Master of Medicine in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medic Masters program.

 The Masters in Medicine degree course in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine is intended to provide in-depth clinical academic knowledge and impart skills required by the imaging specialist. It provides comprehensive coverage of the physical principles of medical imaging, equipment for Diagnostic Imaging, the anatomical basis of imaging, the techniques employed to generate medical images, the interpretation of images,and radiation protection.


The course equips the master in medicine student with the practical skills to perform imaging and intervention procedures, interpret images and write competent reports. The resident is also initiated into research methods,and trained in the management of imaging departments.


The Department collaborates with Radiology Departments in other major Hospitals to expose the students to advance imaging technologies that may not be available in the public teaching Hospitals. To achieve this we have mutual cooperation with the Agha Khan University Hospital, The Nairobi Hospital and the Diagnostic Centre Nairobi. The Department is also an affiliate ultrasound centre of the Jefferson Ultrasound Institute of the Thomas Jefferson University, Pennsylvania, USA.


The goal is to produce a highly competent clinical imaging specialist who can effectively perform using the resources available.

Objectives of Master of Medicine in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medic

 


  1. Equip the students with adequate knowledge on the physical principles of diagnostic imaging.



  2. Equip the students with adequate knowledge on the physical principles of diagnostic imaging.



  3. Impart adequate knowledge to the trainee on the safe usage of ionizing and non-ionizing radiations used in medical imaging.



  4. Equip the student with adequate skills in the techniques of performing imaging and intervention procedures, the interpretation of imaged in the background of sound clinical and pathological changes associated with disease and the presentation of reports.



  5. Equip the student with the skills and ability to carry out research in Diagnostic Imaging.



  6. Prepare the student to adequately manage Diagnostic Imaging Departments.

Entry requirements for Master of Medicine in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medic

 Candidates eligible for admission into the Master of Medicine Degree in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine shall have the following minimum qualifications:-


  1. Be in a possession of a MBChB. degree from the University of Nairobi or from other institutions recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate. The degree should be registrable in Kenya by Kenya Medical Practitioners and board.



  2. Student entering the speciality should have at least two years of satisfactory clinical experience, in this case normally comprising as a minimum the intern year and one another full year of satisfactory clinical experience.

Master of Medicine in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medic Course Subjects

 

The Masters of Medicine degree course in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine at the University of Nairobi covers a minimum of four academic years and a maximum of 8 academic years.


The first academic year of study at the University of Nairobi shall constitute part 1 of the course while the second, third and fourth years of study shall constitute part ii of the course.


Part i shall consist of all the examinable courses in the first year of the Master of Medicine Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine. The degree program shall be by course work, lectures,tutorials,seminars, mult-disciplinary clinical work, practicals, emergency calls in health institutions approved by the School of Medicine, which shall include a primary Health Care Facility and supervised student involvement in the full spectrum of the routine departmental work and clinical duties. Also the residents shall be excepted to undertake self-directed learning.


Part ii of the Masters in Medicine degree programme in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine degree program shall be by course work, lectures, tutorials, seminars, multi-disciplinary clinical work, practicals and emergency calls in health institutions approved by the school of Medicine, which shall include a primary Health Care Facility. Also the residents shall be expected to undertake self-directed learning supervised student involvement in the full spectrum of the routine departmental work and clinical duties.


The Masters in Medicine degree course in Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine candidate shall undertake a research project which shall be presented, assessed and accepted.

Part II courses (second year)


General Medicine and Pathology,Diagnostic Imaging & Radiation Medicine,Advanced Clinical Practice II (Imaging Procedures),Research project/dissertation.


Part III Courses(Third year)


The third year which shall form part of the examinable Part ii of the Master of Medicine Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine shall only be examined by continuous assessment in all the subjects and the course outline shall be as follows;-




  • General medicine and Pathology



  • Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine



  • Advanced Clinical practice ii(Imaging Procedures)



  • Research project/dissertation.




Part IV course a (fourth year examination)


The fourth year which shall form part of the examinable part ii of the Master of Medicine Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine course outline, shall be as follows:-




  • General Medicine and Pathology.



  • Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Medicine.



  • Advanced clinical practice ii (imaging procedures).



  • Research project / dissertation.
