The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry course at the University of Nairobi is a new programme in the department of Biochemistry designed for students who intend to pursue careers in research institutions, medical laboratories, food beverages and quality assurance industries, academia, pharmaceutical companies, nutritional counselling and self-employment in a biochemical/biotechnological entrepreneurship.

Biochemistry has advanced very much following the entry of new frontiers in molecular biology and biotechnology and time is ripe for the University of Nairobi to offer this programme.


Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry graduates from the University of Nairobi will be in a position to employ the upcoming recombinant DNA technology for production of biomedical products and more food for the growing populations using genetically modified organisms.


Biochemistry has become very popular with consequent increase in job opportunities. There is therefore need to mount a Bachelor of Science degree programme in Biochemistry.


The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry course at the University of Nairobi is an intensive three-calender years programme in the faculty of medicine offering three degree options, namely:




  • Medical Biotechnology. The Medical Biochemistry option emphasizes the biochemistry of mammalian organs and tissues.



  • Nutritional technology option focuses on the biochemical basis of nutrition, food formula and analysis. It also addresses the nutritional requirements at different stages of development in a man's health and disease. In addition, the role of microbes in food processing and spoilage will be covered.



  • The Molecular Biology and Biotechnology option is intended to emphasize recombinant DNA technology, genetic engineering and the recent advances in biotechnology achievements.

Entry Requirements:

Candidates eligible for admission to the above degree programme will be required to be holders of at least one of the following qualifications:-




    1. An aggregation of C+ grade which is the minimum University of Nairobi admission requirement and must have obtained at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) the following grades:


Biological science C+


Physical sciences C+


Mathematics C


English/Kiswahili C


or


Biology C+


chemistry C+


Mathematics/physics C


English/Kiswahili C+





    1. Two principal passes at A level in Biology and Chemistry and a subsidiary all obtained at the same sitting.



    2. A degree in Biological sciences and/or Chemistry from any institution recognized the University of Nairobi Senate.



    3. A Diploma in any of the following from a University of Nairobi senate recognized training institution:



        >Animal health


        >Agriculture


        >Medical laboratory technology


        >Science laboratory technology


        >Food science technology


        >Education(Biology and Chemistry)


        >Dental science


        >Public health


        >Basic or Advanced Nursing Diploma


        >Radiography


        >Pharmaceutical Technology


        >Clinical medicine (Clinical officers diploma)


        In addition, an applicant must have a minimum of C+ in Biology or Biological Sciences and Chemistry or Physical Sciences at KCSE





    1. Be registered at the University of Nairobi or at any University recognised by the Senate for degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or Bachelor of Dental Surgery or Bachelor of Pharmacy or Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and must have successfully completed the pre-clinical programmes to join in the level of study.



    2. Any other qualification equivalent to the above subject to the University of Nairobi Senates approval.

Course Objective

Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry graduates from the University of Nairobi will be in a position to employ the upcoming recombinant DNA technology for production of biomedical products and more food for the growing populations using genetically modified organisms.

Biochemistry has become very popular with consequent increase in job opportunities. There is therefore need to mount a Bachelor of Science degree programme in Biochemistry.

Course Programme

 

The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry curriculum at the University of Nairobi shall take a minimum of three calender years of 44 weeks each.


Each level of study at the University of Nairobi shall comprise of four quarters of 11 weeks each..


In level 1 of study at the University of Nairobi, a candidate is required to take all the twelve courses units offered plus THREE units from the common undergraduate course.


In level II of study at the University of Nairobi, a candidate is required to take all the thirteen course units offered.


In level three of study at the University of Nairobi, a candidate is required to register for HBC 301,302,303,304, 305,306 and courses for any of the following degree options:






      1. HBC 307,308,309,310,311 and 312 for Bsc in Biochemistry (medical) option.



      2. HBC 308,309,312,313 and 314 for Bsc in Biochemistry (Nutritional option)



      3. HBC 310,312,314,315 and 316 for Bsc in Biochemistry(Molecular Biology and Biotechnology option.


The Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry candidates at the University of Nairobi are expected to attend the courses registered for in to the satisfaction of the Department of Biochemistry and board of the school.



 


Request for credit transfers will be made in writing to the Dean of the school after admission. Official transcripts from a university recognized by the University of Nairobi senate must accompany the request.


The course units in which exemptions are sought shall not exceed one third of the total units in that level.


The candidate seeking exemption will meet all the prescribed costs by the University of Nairobi.
