Overview

The Higher National Diploma in Archives and Records Management offers a learning environment informed by industry and relevant professional practice. 

This course provides a first professional qualification in records management and  archives. Students develop an understanding of the processes of information handling and use within organisations.

The course offers further training in the areas of information handling, information management in the context of new technologies; as well as in data storage, retrieval and preservation.

Upon graduating, you will have a professionally accredited qualification for a career involving management of corporate information, including digital records; and managing historical archives for research and public access.

Career options:

  • archivist: authenticating and appraising historical documents and archival materials; maintaining accessible, retrievable computer archives and databases; locating new materials and organising their acquisition and display
  • records manager: managing the storage and maintenance organisational records; maintaining the legal requirements of record keeping and freedom of information; ensuring the responsible and appropriate disposal of records
  • librarian: managing and resourcing a branch library, a section of a large library, a small special library, or a research program; supervising and leading staff; providing expert advice on strategic information management; managing major projects such as information technology systems

Objectives

This Higher National Diploma in Archives and Records Management course intends to provide participants with the requisite knowledge to set-up, implement and maintain knowledge, records, archives, and information management systems for organisations and support archivists and records management in their professional duties.

Students will learn modules such as:

  • Introduction to Archives,
  • Conservation and Preservation,
  • Organisational Communication,
  • E Records,
  • Knowledge Management etc. 

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirements for the Higher National Diploma in Archives and Record Management are:

  • Pass in Diploma Level
  • Degree from a recognized university;
  • Any other equivalent qualification as approved by KNEC.
