The BA (History and International Studies) programme at Egerton University is customized to contribute to realizing Egerton University's Vision of a world class university for the advancement of humanity. In accordance with the proposition that human history is infinitely diverse, the programme incorporates a wide variety of courses.

The programme will help in forging an informed awareness of the unity inherent in human diversity as well as equipping the graduates to face the challenges of globalization. Similarly, the programme encompasses the University‘s Mission to, inter alia, disseminate significant knowledge and offer exemplary education in order to innovatively influence national development.

The diverse course offerings should assist in forging a national identity and cohesion, while contributing to international understanding.

Graduates of the programme will therefore be equipped with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to operate effectively in a global village that emphasizes national cohesion, regional cooperation and integration, as well as a functional global society.

Objectives of B.A History and International Studies

The BA History and International Studies programme at Egerton University is aimed at imparting an unequivocally inclusive history and international education. It is intended to provide the skills required to analyze and interpret national and global affairs in historical perspective. A further aim is to equip the graduates with the requisite knowledge to understand and enhance Kenya‘s place in the international community.

The specific objectives of the programme are:

  1. To train the students in historiography and source studies, methods of historical and international relations esearch, and applications of conceptual and theoretical frameworks in academic writing;
  2. To cultivate the students‘ expertise in Kenya‘s history and its contemporary situation whilst enabling their comprehensive study of selected aspects of African and world history.
  3. To inculcate in the students awareness and informed understanding of the international system and Kenya‘s place within it.
  4. To induct the students into specified subject areas for purposes of concentration and specialization.
  5. To prepare students for further studies in the field of history and international studies.

Entry requirements for B.A History and International Studies

To be eligible for admission to the BA (History and International Studies) programme at Egerton University, the applicant must satisfy the minimum entry requirements for a Bachelor's degree of Egerton University as stipulated in the Statutes.

In addition, applicants must have obtained a C+ in history and government or related subjects at KCSE level.

Mininum Entry Requirements for Bachelor's Degree
The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must:

  • Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

  • Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

  • Egerton University Statutes 2008 43
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher.

OR

  • Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent
  • Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

AND
Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.

To be admitted for a PRE-SERVICE DEGREE PROGRAM, a prospective candidate must have all the requirements set up by the joint Admission Board (JAB), with a prospective IN-SERVICE student must have completed a diplomaprogram in the relevant field and graduated with at least a CREDIT.

B.A History and International Studies Course Subjects

The BA (History and International Studies) curriculum at Egerton Univeristy is structured and discipline-specific.

Ninety-two percent (92%) of the Credit Factors (CFs) are therefore drawn from the specialty. The remaining eight percent (8%) of the CFs comprise Common Core Courses and other prescribed courses intended to expose the students to a well-rounded programme of study.

This is a four-year course for full time students and takes up to eight academic years for part- time students.

In order to graduate, a student in the programme must successfully complete one hundred and seventy-one decimal five (171.0) CFs. These shall include one hundred and forty-seven (146.5) CFs of courses in History and International Studies, and twenty-four decimal five (24.5) CFs of other courses.

All First and Second Year courses are compulsory.

The compulsory courses in the Third and the Fourth Year are as indicated in the Schedule of Courses. Each student shall take three elective courses per semester in the Third and the Fourth Year. These courses will be offered, depending on the students' interest and availability of the staff. Students may choose to take the courses interchangeably between the two academic years.
