Co-operative movement is the heart of this country's progress, cutting across all sectors. It is based on principle of pooling meager recourses for the common benefit of all. Kenya being a developing country with a variety of problems needs to embrace the spirit of co-operative to achieve its Millennium Development Goals.

This degree programme is meant to train manpower with co-operative skills to steer our economy for faster economic growth, to be in line with vision 2030.

Egerton University students who train in this programme may become; Co-operative accountant, Front office savings clerk, Co-operative personnel manager, Co-operative managers and Co-operative credit officer.

Objectives of Bachelor of Cooperative Management

The main aim of Bachelor of Co-operative Management degree programme

  • To develop a theoretical and technical understanding of Accounting, Finance, Banking, Marketing and Human Resources Management concepts and practices and the ability to cope with future developments in these areas;
  • To enhance self confidence and the ability to critically evaluate business and management issues, and develop solutions from the ethical, professional as well as academic perspectives;
  • To instill a critical and integrated understanding of the world of business, with a firm foundation in related areas such as economics, ethics, information technology, organization behaviour and co-operative law; To prepare the students for progression to higher degree work and research in various disciplines.

Entry requirements for Bachelor of Cooperative Management

All candidates admitted to the degree programme of Bachelors of co-operative management degree must satisfy the minimum common entrance requirements as stipulated by Egerton University senate. EITHER
Be a holder of KCSE certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+ and a minimum of C in both Mathematics and English/Kiswahili
Be a holder of KACE certificate with a minimum of two principal passes and subsidiary pass and a minimum of credit pass in Mathematics at KCE OR
Be a holder of a diploma in a relevant discipline with a credit pass from an institution recognized by the University Senate. OR
Be a holder of any qualification recognized by the University Senate.

Based on senate approved guidelines, candidates may be allowed to transfer up to 30% of credit factors from a related diploma course.

Mininum Entry Requirements for Bachelor's Degree at Egerton University
The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must:

  • Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

  • Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

  • Egerton University Statutes 2008 43
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher.

OR

  • Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent
  • Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

AND
Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.

To be admitted for a PRE-SERVICE DEGREE PROGRAM, a prospective candidate must have all the requirements set up by the joint Admission Board (JAB), with a prospective IN-SERVICE student must have completed a diplomaprogram in the relevant field and graduated with at least a CREDIT.

Bachelor of Cooperative Management Course Subjects

The Bachelors of Co-operative Management degree programme takes FOUR academic years for full time students.
Part-time students may be allowed to cover the programme within EIGHT academic years.
In order to fulfill the graduation requirements for Bachelor of Co-operative Management degree, candidates are required to take and pass at least 168 CF's of courses approved by the senate.
