About Bachelor Of Disaster Risk Management And Sustainable Development Bachelors Degree program.

The Bachelor of Disaster Management and Development (DMD) degree at Cooperative University College of Kenya is designed to provide learners with skills that will prepare them for a broad range of employment whilst allowing them to focus on skills of particular value in disasters management in pursuit of sustainable development.

Target groups


The programme is open to qualified K.C.S.E holders and other persons possessing equivalent or any other acceptable qualifications who wish to pursue a career, academic or research interest in disasters management and sustainable development.
The programme is also targeting professionals from the following backgrounds and related fields; natural resource management, Fire department, police, Nursing and armed forces, International agencies such as UN,UNICEF,WFP,WHO, NGOS and other related agencies, risk managers and insurance prociders, administrators and other related fields.

Objectives of Bachelor Of Disaster Risk Management And Sustainable Development

The DMD programme aims to achieve the following goals:


  1. To prepare learners to understand and appreciate disasters as a
    challenge in development work and therefore serve as change agents in
    the community.
  2. To develop learners practical skills to design and implement strategic programmes for managing disasters.
  3. To provide strategic guidance in disaster management and sustainable
    development as well as advising communities, Governments, International
    and Non-Governmental organizations on matters pertaining to disaster
    management and sustainable development
  4. To prepare learners with research knowledge and skills for further
    training and contribution in disaster management and sustainable
    development studies.

Entry requirements for Bachelor Of Disaster Risk Management And Sustainable Development

  • Be a holder of KCSE (or equivalent examination) certificate with a
    minimum aggregate of C+ and a minimum of C in both Mathematics and
    English or Kiswahili, OR
  • Be a holder of KACE certificate with a minimum of two principal passes and a minimum of a credit pass in Mathematics at KCE, OR
  • Be a holder of a relevant diploma with a credit pass that is recognized by the University senate. OR
  • Be a holder of any other qualification accepted by senate as equivalent to any of the above

Bachelor Of Disaster Risk Management And Sustainable Development Course Subjects

Each semester will have a maximum of 7 units.
The programme will run for
a minimum of 8 semesters and a maximum of 12 semesters.
The period of
the Industrial Attachment will be part of the programme duration.
The
Industrial Attachment will take eight (8) weeks.
