Entrepreneurship spirit and Innovation is the backbone of the biggest economies in the world. In this regard, such big economies such as the USA have an education system that emphasizes entrepreneurship and innovation. Small businesses are critical to such big economies and have been invaluable in creation of employment and realization of great economical and social change in form of a strong and vibrant middle class.

This bachelor of entrepreneurship and small business management course (BENS) at Egerton University will create a specific and highly trained manpower that will drive entrepreneurship and provide skilled management in this important sector. In this course (BENS), we seek to provide the student with requisite skills to be entrepreneurs and/or innovators and capable of providing consultation services to already existing businesses.

This course fits perfectly well with the ambitious vision 2030 of the Kenyan government, which promises to make Kenya a middle income country by 2030. Based on experiences from other countries that have witnessed great economical development, it would be impossible for Kenya to achieve such feat, without successful small businesses and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Therefore this course (BENS), addresses an important national issue i.e. strong and vibrant economy, responsible for its own citizens.

Objectives of Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and small Business Management

The aim of the Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management (BENS) degree is to provide students with necessary skills that can enable them to respond to their need for effective management of public and private enterprises. The Specific objectives of this programme include:

  • To develop a coherent and broad based coverage of business organizations and their Management.
  • To equip the learners with appropriate business skills thus enhancing their confidence and ability to critically evaluate business information requirements and develop solutions from moral, professional and academic perspectives.
  • To provide students with experience in the development and use of computer systems for solving business problems and marketing managerial decisions. To prepare the candidates to undertake research and pursue Post-graduate studies.
     

Entry requirements for Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and small Business Management

All candidates admitted to the degree programme of Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management (BENS) must satisfy the minimum common entrance requirements of Egerton University.
In addition a candidate must obtain at least a C grade in Mathematics.
Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognised by Egerton University Senate may also be admitted.
 Admission may be offered to outstanding diploma holders in Co-operative Management, Banking, Finance, Agri-Business, Marketing, Insurance and Risk Management and Management Science disciplines passed with a credit or higher or their equivalent. Such cases will be treated on individual merit.
Admission may also be offered to those holding CPA II and/or its equivalent through mature age entrance scheme as specified by the faculty.
Based on Senate approved guidelines, candidates may be allowed to transfer up to a maximum of 30% of the required programme credits from a diploma course or its equivalent from an institution recognised by the University Senate.

Mininum Entry Requirements for Bachelor's Degree at Egerton University
The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must:

  • Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

  • Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

  • Egerton University Statutes 2008 43
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher.

OR

  • Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent
  • Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

AND
Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.

To be admitted for a PRE-SERVICE DEGREE PROGRAM, a prospective candidate must have all the requirements set up by the joint Admission Board (JAB), with a prospective IN-SERVICE student must have completed a diplomaprogram in the relevant field and graduated with at least a CREDIT.

Bachelor of Entrepreneurship and small Business Management Course Subjects

The Bachelors of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management degree programme takes FOUR academic years for full time students.
Part-time students may be allowed to cover the programme within EIGHT academic years.
Each semester will have a maximum of seven (7) and minimum of (2) units for part-time students.
