Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering Program Offered at Egerton University

Bachelors Degree 5 years Fulltime Fee: on application Intake: Ongoing

Bachelors Degree (Accredited by: Egerton University)

About Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering Bachelors Degree program.

The main purpose of introducing this programme is to facilitate possible upgrading of holders of the Diploma in Engineering to a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering level focussing on those areas relevant to the local industry. As a technology degree, it builds on the practically oriented training at diploma level. The curriculum for the degree of Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering is therefore designed to produce graduates with sufficient theoretical knowledge, design skills and practical experience that will enable them fit into any area of Civil Engineering practice.

The programme aims at giving a chance to already trained graduates from tertiary institutions to further their studies. Qualified and Practising Technician Engineers who are holders of Diploma in Engineering or its equivalent will be trained to a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Technology level so that they can be considered for registration as Professional Engineers by the Engineers Registration Board (ERB).

The cornerstone of the programme is the deliberate emphasis placed on computer applications in solving engineering problems and the possibility of Electives for specialization.
The Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering programme targets diploma holders from recognized middle level colleges who will be upgraded to degree level.
Such graduates will be better placed for the competitive job market by combining hands on experience which is normally emphasised at diploma level.
The Course will also provide a missing link between Masters Programmes in Engineering and Diploma Programmes. It will facilitate possible upgrading and hence a route/pre-requisite for admission to relevant Masters programmes for the Diploma holders in Engineering related areas.
The programme creates opportunity for specialisation in the following areas of the Civil engineering discipline:

  • Environmental Engineering
  • Water Resources Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Construction Engineering and Management
  • Geotechnical and Highway Engineering

Objectives of Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering

At the end of the training, the student will have acquired practical and conceptual skills in research, consultancy, planning, design, development, operation and maintenance founded on scientific principles, upon which Civil Engineering is based.

The specific objectives of this programme are to:

  • Extend the students appreciation of principles established in his or her previous study.
  • Develop the knowledge and technical ability to analyse, synthesize and optimise the variables in real problems as posed by the project, clients or technologists/engineer.
  • Develop the ability to discern and evolve by scientific methods the most appropriate technology and/or materials to be used in a given situation or problem.
  • Give a theoretical/practical orientation to the graduate engineer to be able to contribute practical solutions to water, environmental, structural, building construction and engineering management problems.
  • Impart knowledge and modern technical and managerial skills to students, to enable them respond effectively to the nation‟s industrialisation challenges.
  • Prepare graduate engineers with sound engineering ability in planning, design construction operation and maintenance of civil facilities.
  • Provide a firm academic base to students to enable them carry out research, pursue further studies and offer consultancy services in Civil Engineering and other related areas.
