This BSc Applied Computer Science degree program at Egerton University program has been designed with the intention of making the program competitive while maintaining high standards. With the Courses offered, the graduates will become highly competitive in the job market and at the same time prepare them in becoming independent in making choices of career and self employment. Students are trained not only in the technical areas of specialization but also in personal development, communication skills and entrepreneurship.

Objectives of BSc. Applied Computer Science

The primary aim of the Applied Computer Science course is to provide general Computer Science Courses required in other disciplines. It is intended that upon completion of the programme the graduate should:

  • Be able to identify and apply software engineering and hardware engineering tools effectively;
  • Have acquired adequate skills, ability to design and implement suitable computer applications, both software and hardware, and advice on such applications;
  • Be equipped to pursue postgraduate studies in applied computer science; and
  • Have attained academic competence in computer science to function as a productive member of his/her profession.

Entry requirements for BSc. Applied Computer Science

The candidates must meet the minimum requirements as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute
Candidates must have passed the K.C.S.E., or equivalent examination with the following minimum grades to be considered:

  • Mathematics B
  • B grade in one humanities subject and one language subject.

Holder of a diploma with credits passes and above in Computer Science, Applied Computer Science or equivalent from institutions recognized by Egerton University.

Students admitted with Diploma in Computer Science, Applied Computer Science or IT may transfer credits according to Egerton University regulations.
Candidates who have completed Advanced level (A-level) courses with mathematics as one of their major subjects and have obtained at least two principal passes will also be considered.

Mininum Entry Requirements for Bachelor's Degree
The entry requirements set out below are only minimum, and they in no way entitle an applicant to a place in the University. Applicants must:

  • Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent.

OR

  • Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination:
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting.

OR

  • Egerton University Statutes 2008 43
  • Two (2) Principal passes obtained at different sittings provided the passes are of Grade C or higher.

OR

  • Hold a Diploma of Egerton University with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent
  • Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

AND
Meet additional entry requirements as may be specified by the respective Department, Faculty, School or Institute.

To be admitted for a PRE-SERVICE DEGREE PROGRAM, a prospective candidate must have all the requirements set up by the joint Admission Board (JAB), with a prospective IN-SERVICE student must have completed a diplomaprogram in the relevant field and graduated with at least a CREDIT.

BSc. Applied Computer Science Course Subjects

A student is required to register for at least 18 CF‘s in each of the eight semesters of study. In the first and second years of study in Applied Computer Science, the student studies a mixture of compulsory Basic and Applied Computer Science Courses together with selected Courses in Mathematics and Physics.

At the end of the third year, students also attend field attachment in industrial setup that helps them identify application areas of their study and gain knowledge in industrial settings. It also helps them in preparation for the projects expected to be done in their fourth year of study.

This course take four academic years which is equivalent to eight semesters for fulltime students.
