Be in possession of a Medical degree obtained in an institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate and registrable in Kenya with the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board.
Should have completed at least one year of intern-ship in a medical institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.
Following intern-ship should have preferably at least one year of clinical experience as a medical officer or equivalent in a hospital or institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.
Produce evidence of good personal character and professional status attested by two acceptable references. These shall be from senior members of the medical profession of consultant status or equivalent.
In addition to the above requirements the application shall be reviewed and approved the the members of the Department of Medicine at the University of Nairobi after which the successful candidate will be called for interview. The interview shall be in two parts – a written exam set by the Department of Medicine and an oral interview set by the Faculty Board of Examiners.
Course Design
The educational strategy in the Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine curriculum at the University of Nairobi utilizes an integrated approach with emphasis on bringing different sub-specialities on internal medicine together. The teaching / learning is organised by body systems (e.g cardiovascular system, respiratory) and other disciplines. The curriculum is student centred, but with an organised learning schedule.
Course Structure
The duration of the Master of Medicine Internal Medicine course at the University of Nairobi shall be 3 years.
The programme shall be divided into two parts here below referred to as Part 1 and Part II Master of Medicine Programmes.
Part I: Year 1 (Part I)
Part I of the Master of Medicine Internal Medicine programme at the University of Nairobi will be during the first year of study during which time the student will receive formal lectures of introduction to the basic sciences and their application in clinical and research practice. These lectures will run over one full academic year as drawn out by the Senate of the University of Nairobi.
Part II: Year 2
A candidate/student will be in Part II of the Master of Medicine course at the University of University after having successfully passed the university examination at the end of Part I (first year) of the course.
The first year of the Part II Master of Medicine programme at the University of Nairobi will be not less than 12 calendar months and shall be devoted to clinical medicine and rotation through the various support departments in recognized hospitals and institutions.
The Master of Medicine Internal Medicine student will also be expected to rotate through the specialised units of Dermatology, Intensive Care Unit, Psychiatry, Nephrology and Radiology and any others as set by the Department of Medicine of the University of Nairobi for periods not less than one month each.
The Master of Medicine Internal Medicine candidate will be expected to present his/her project proposal for the dissertation for approval by the Department of Medicine at the University of Nairobi and to start work on his/her approved topic within four months of passing the Part I examination.
The Master of Medicine Internal Medicine candidate will also attend lectures, seminars and demonstrations in infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS for a period not less than three months.
Year 3 Part II
The Master of Medicine Internal Medicine candidate at the University of Nairobi will continue with the dissertation until full completion and acceptance by the internal examiners.
The Master of Medicine candidate will spend not less than six months rotating through the clinical wards under supervision by a member of the Department of Medicine at the University of Nairobi. This rotation should be spent in at least two different medical units.
The University of Nairobi Master of Medicine Internal Medicine candidate will continue with full time clinical work.
The University of Nairobi Master of Medicine Internal Medicine will in addition be required to participate in clinical case presentations, tutorials and seminars.
The University of Nairobi Master of Medicine Internal Medicine candidate will continue participating in teaching other health cadres.

The University of Nairobi Master of Medicine Internal Medicine candidate shall also undertake full time clinical work at Kenyatta National Hospital or any medical institution recognized by the university of Nairobi senate at the level of Senior House Officer.
