The main objective of the Master of Science in Clinical Psychology programme at the University of Nairobi is to develop competent personnel to meet the demands of clinical psychiatric team. This will ensure effective and efficient care of the psychologically disordered in Kenya, the adjacent geographical region and beyond.

Objectives of Master of Science in Clinical Psychology

The main objective of the Master of Science in Clinical Psychology programme at the University of Nairobi is to develop competent personnel to meet the demands of clinical psychiatric team. This will ensure effective and efficient care of the psychologically disordered in Kenya, the adjacent geographical region and beyond.

Entry requirements for Master of Science in Clinical Psychology

The following shall be eligible for enrolment into the Master of Science in Clinical Psychology degree programme at the University of Nairobi:


  1. Candidates with a minimum qualification of a first degree in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry nursing and veterinary medicine from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognised by the senate of the University of Nairobi.



  2. Candidates with a minimum of an upper second class degree from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognised by the senate of the University of Nairobi, with a major in psychology, counselling psychology, sociology or social work.



  3. Candidates with a minimum pass degree from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognised by the senate of Nairobi University), with a major in psychology, counselling psychology, sociology or social work provided they have acquired relevant work experience.



  4. Candidates who have fulfilled entry requirement for a masters degree in any other department at the University of Nairobi and on the recommendation of that department wish to register for a specific course unit.



Credits Transfer


Credit transfer will be allowed up to a maximum of one third of theory courses provided the applicant had pursued similar courses at the same level in an institution recognised by the senate and on payment of the prescribed exemption fee.

Master of Science in Clinical Psychology Course Subjects

 The programme comprises a:






        • part I of 10 theory courses,



        • part ii of 5 compulsory practicals and



        • part iii of a dissertation shall be taken first.



      1. The programme covers two academic years consisting of 6 semesters of 15 weeks each.



      2. A candidate may remain registered in the programme for a period of 18 semesters.



      3. A candidate may take a minimum of 2 courses and a maximum of 5 courses per semester.

Psychopathology, Measurement methods in Psychology, Non-psychological basis of Psychopathology, Childhood and Adolescent Psychological Disorder, Adult Psychological Disorders, Psychosexual Disorders, Psychotraumatic disorders, Substance Related Disorders, Psychopathological Aspects of Chronic and Terminal Illness, Forensic and Ethical Aspects of Psychological practice.




Part ii:


Psychotherapy I, Psychotherapy II, Adult Clinical Practicum, Adolescent Clinical Practicum, Child Clinical Practicum.


Part iii


Dissertation.
