About Paediatric Critical Care Nursing (PCCN) Postgraduate Diploma program.

During the last decade, the challenges of development of new diseases and illness that include HIV/Aids, swine flu and reemergence of other diseases like tuberculosis and rift valley fever has led to an increasing need for specialised care and in specific critical care for children. This care is required across the whole continuum of critical care which has been described as the care required by any child who has a life threatening illness and injury.

Infant and child mortality are key indicators of child health and nurses trained in this area are will contribute to the countries millennium goals.

There is also the increasing need for reducing the cost of hospitalisation especially in intensive care units by reducing length of stay in the hospital and offering cost effective interventions by the critical care team. This too can only be achieved by having highly trained nurses and teams that are efficient and effective in these interventions.

Gertrude’s Institute of Child Health and Research becomes the first institution in Kenya to offer Paediatric Critical Care Nursing at higher national diploma level to help bridge this gap.

This Paediatric Critical Care Nursing course, therefore, is geared toward preparing specialised nurses to contribute at a variety of levels to this critical care continuum across the health services, from resuscitation, critical stabilisation, transfer and vigilant and responsive care through the often turbulent and dynamic period of critical illness to help reduce the child morbidity and mortality.
