About Postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Diseases Postgraduate Diploma program.

A large number of diseases, which result in increased morbidity and mortality in tropical countries, are caused by pathogenic organisms classified as bacterial,viral,fungal and parasitic. Early diagnosis, treatment and control remain a challenge,particularly in resource-limited areas where health facilities and training opportunities are absent.

The Postgraduate diploma course in Tropical Diseases offered at the University of Nairobi is specifically designed for persons interested in updating or refreshing their knowledge of tropical diseases for purposes of effective management and control. Those working in temperate and sub-tropical countries and who by nature of their work are able to diagnose and manage important tropical infections will also benefit.

Objectives of Postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Diseases



  • Equip students with the knowledge of health care needs in the tropics, with emphasis on the aetiology of tropical diseases.



  • Equip students with the knowledge and skills required in the prevention, clinical and laboratory diagnosis, and management of tropical diseases.



  • Equip students with technical skills and ability to teach and carry out basic research in tropical disease.

Entry requirements for Postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Diseases

 

The minimum requirements for eligibility into the Postgraduate Diploma on Tropical Diseases course are:




  1. Holders of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery,Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees from the University of Nairobi.



  2. Holders of equivalent qualifications to those specified above from universities recognised by the Senate of the University of Nairobi.



Transfer of Credits/exemptions


A candidate may exempted from some course units from institutions recognised by the University of Nairobi Senate, subject to the following conditions:




  1. Must have passed in similar course units at Postgraduate Diploma level.



  2. Request for exemption should be made in writing, on admission, addressed to the Director of Board of Postgraduate studies, through Director, Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases and should be accompanied by officially endorsed supporting documents for the relevant course.



  3. Payment of the prescribed exemption fees.



  4. No candidate shall be exempted for more than one third of the total number of units required in the course.

Postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Diseases Course Subjects



  1. The minimum duration of the course shall be 2 semesters and a maximum of 6 semesters each of 15 weeks.



  2. The course shall be conducted through course work, examinations and research project.



  3. The course shall consist of 9 course units and a research project.



  4. The minimum number of courses taken in a semester shall be 3 and the maximum 5.



  5. A course unit shall be defined as 60 contact hours comprising of lectures, semesters tutorials, laboratory practicals, clinical demonstrations and field visits.
