Objectives of Fisheries Science and Technology

This fisheries science and technology certificate course provides students theoretical understanding and practical skills in the principles of fisheries science: from fish ecology, population dynamics and stock analyses to scientific advice and fisheries management actions. The course caters to students who are interested in fish, fisheries, marine biology and limnology and who want to learn more about sustainable use and conservation of our natural resources.

The specific objectives of this course of study are:

  • Fish handling, processing and preservation
  • Marine crafts products
  • Marine products used by artisans to make crafts include shells, coral, bones, skins, teeth, stones (pebbles), scales, whole animals, beach sand, and sea water
  • Set up a small-scale fishery enterprise for commercial purposes.

  • Type and structure of enterprise
  • Feasibility studies and Business   plan
  • Basic costal Navigation
  • Basic repairs and maintenance of outboard and inboard motors.

Entry requirements for Fisheries Science and Technology

The minimum entry requirements for the certificate in fisheries science and technology course are:

  • KCSE Mean Grade D (Plain) or;
  • Pass in relevant Artisan Course or;
  • Equivalent qualification approved by KNEC.
