Refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) technicians design, install and maintain cooling systems in buildings like supermarkets, offices, schools, hospitals and food processing plants.

This Refrigeration and Air Conditioning diploma provides competencies to develop systems, select equipment, and commission, maintain and diagnose malfunctions of refrigeration systems and equipment that apply to commercial food storage and preservation and air conditioning and air distribution equipment and special applications. 

Your work could cover one of two broad areas:

  • refrigeration ? designing, installing and maintaining cooling systems in places like supermarkets, restaurants, hospitals, food processing plants and factories
  • air-conditioning ? installing and servicing systems that control air quality, temperature and humidity inside offices, schools, leisure complexes and other modern buildings

Whichever area you work in, your duties could include:

  • surveying buildings where cooling systems are to be fitted
  • discussing requirements with customers
  • giving quotes for work
  • designing and installing systems
  • running quality checks to make sure systems are working properly and safely
  • diagnosing and fixing faults
  • planned maintenance

Entry Requirements

  • KCSE Mean Grade C- or
  • Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning

Objectives of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning

This Diploma in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration will teach you how to develop systems, select equipment and commission, maintain and diagnose faults or malfunctions of refrigeration systems.

You will gain skills to enable you to work with special applications, commercial food storage and preservation and air-conditioning and air-distribution equipment. These skill sinclde:

  • Regulatory requirements for purchasing and handling refrigerants
  • How to develop and follow a personal competency development plan
  • Manage Occupational Health & Safety requirements
  • Work with various energy sector requirements and skills
  • Use and produce drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications
  • Fix and secure electrotechnology equipment
  • Solve problems in ELV single path circuits
  • Fabricate, assemble and dismantle utilities industry components
