United States International University Africa USIU-A - overview

United States International University (USIU) was founded by William C. Rust and registered under the Companies Act (Cap 486) on 18th September, 1969.

Since its establishment as a university in 1970, USIU has had four Vice Chancellors at its helm. They are William C. Rust; Director of the Nairobi campus, Dr. Dee Aker, 1981-1984; Director of the Nairobi campus Dr. Lillian K. Beam, 1984-1994; and Professor Freida Brown was the Director of the Nairobi campus from 1994-1999 and has been Vice Chancellor since 1999.

In 1999, USIU received its accreditation from the Commission for Higher Education (CHE) in Kenya. In 2008, USIU received accreditation as an independent university from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in the United States.

Prospective students interested in applying to USIU must ensure that they meet the entrance requirements. If a prospective student meets these requirements, they should then verify with the application checklist for the necessary documents.

International applicants must demonstrate English proficiency before commencing with their academic program. International applicants are considered for admission on the same basis as local applicants. For students who may want to transfer credits, they must ensure that they meet the requirements set out by the admissions office.

USIU also offers financial aid opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.Those wishing to seek external financial aid can choose from the list provided on the Financial Aid page on the USIU website.

The university has three schools that offer various undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The schools are The Chandaria School of Business, The School of Humanities & Social Sciences, and The School of Science & Technology.

USIU's alumni includes major figures such as Major General Charles Mwanzia, Managing Director of Access Kenya Mr. Kris Senanu, CEO of the Bidco Group Mr. Vimal Shah, Honorable Martha Karua, Member of Parliament for Gichugu Constituency and Honorable Lewis Nguyai, Assistant Minister for Local Government and Member for Kikuyu Constituency.

 


The university is an independent, not-for-profit institution serving 5534 students representing 62 nationalities; 85% of whom are domestic and 15% are international.
