About Tangaza University College

Tangaza College is a Catholic University College jointly owned by the member religious congregations. It has its roots in Catholic Tradition, especially as planted and nourished in East Africa (the AMECEA region) through the missionary endeavors which spanned the late 19th and entire 20th centuries.

Now in the 21st century, and in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, the people of Tangaza recognize that they themselves are sent to participate in the renewal and development of that Tradition.

As befits an institution of higher learning this will be realized primarily through commitment to academic excellence and the personal transformation of its students, both lay and religious.

Why study at Tangaza University College

In all its programs, Tangaza College endeavors to enhance lifelong learning, foster personal growth and develop leadership qualities. The college undertakes to prepare ministers for the Church and the Society of today. Tangaza wishes to produce graduates who are both highly qualified and deeply committed to the service and transformation of society.

Nonacademic programs, services, and activities in the College are meant to assist students in developing intellectually, spiritually, socially, physically, and personally. In order to do this effectively, an atmosphere of respect, caring and justice for all is necessary. Such an atmosphere can foster excellence, service to others, and the integrated development of each person. It is the duty of every member of the College to contribute to the creation of that atmosphere.

Tangaza University is one of the middle-ranged private universities, with 30 years of imparting knowledge through distinguished academic excellence.

Tangaza University College - Historical journey

Tangaza Theological Centre of Religious opened its doors to the first group of students on 25 August 1986.

Twenty students came from seven countries and from three religious congregations (Consolata Fathers, Salesians of Don Bosco and Holy Ghost Fathers).

On 30 October 1987, in the presence of the Pro-Nuncio, the College was blessed and formally inaugurated by His Eminence Maurice Cardinal Otunga, Archbishop of Nairobi. The enrolment at Tangaza College (as it is now legally known) has continued to increase since 1987. In the academic year 2008-2009, a total of 1206 students, 436 of these in the Theology Programme, were studying in the College.

On 3 November 1992, the charter of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) was granted by the President of Kenya. With the conferring of this charter and in accordance with the terms of the document, Convention for the Constituent Colleges of Catholic University of Eastern Africa, 1997, Tangaza College is recognized as a constituent College of CUEA. While remaining administratively autonomous, Tangaza College is an integral part of the main University (CUEA) for academic purposes.

Over the years a number of Institutes have been affiliated to the College or have been established as integrated Institutes of the College:

In November 1995, the Tangaza Board of Governors approved the Institute of Social Ministry in Mission and it became an integral part of Tangaza College.

In May 1996, Christ the Teacher Institute for Education was accepted by the Board of Governors as an affiliated Institute of Tangaza College.

In August 1996, the Tangaza Board of Governors approved the Institute of Spirituality and Religious Formation and it became an integral part of Tangaza

College.

 In May 1999, The Maryknoll Institute of African Studies was academically affiliated to Tangaza College.

In November 2002 the Board of Governors approved that the Social Communication Department of the Theology Programme be upgraded to an Institute of Social Communication. It was inaugurated in March 2003 on Tangaza Day and became an integrated Institute of Tangaza College.

In November 2002, the Board of Governors approved the Institute of Youth Ministry as an integrated Institute of Tangaza College. It received its first students in August 2003.

Beginning in August, 2007, DePaul University�s School for New Learning began a Bachelor�s degree programme on the campus of Tangaza College in partnership with ISRF.

Tangaza College is located along Langata South Road, Off Langata road (past Bomas of Kenya). About 26 km from the city center of Nairobi, Kenya.
It lies in close proximity to the Nairobi National Park.
