Mechanical Engineering

Katine Technical Training Institute

Diploma 3 years Fee: on application

Overview

Mechanical engineering is an engineering branch that combines engineering physics and mathematics principles with materials science to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems.

The mechanical engineering field requires an understanding of core areas including mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity.

In addition to these core principles, mechanical engineers use tools such as computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, and others.

A mechanical engineer is mainly involved in the design, development and manufacture engines, ships, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, building services and manufacturing processes.

Mechanical engineers make a difference. That's because mechanical engineering careers center on creating technologies to meet human needs. Virtually every product or service in modern life has probably been touched in some way by a mechanical engineer to help humankind.

This includes solving today's problems and creating future solutions in health care, energy, transportation, world hunger, space exploration, climate change, and more.

Career path:

Objectives

This diploma program in mechanical engineering covers mainly fundamental mechanical engineering knowledge and skills required in the design and operation of machines.

This mechanical engineering programme aims at helping students to develop, through a balanced curriculum with generic and vocational knowledge and skills, and structured whole person development competencies in the engineering trade so as to enhance their opportunities for employment and / or further studies.

Mechanical engineering diploma graduates will be able to:

  • Analyze problems to see how mechanical and thermal devices might help solve a particular problem
  • Design or redesign mechanical and thermal devices or subsystems, using analysis and computer-aided design
  • Investigate equipment failures or difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and to recommend remedies
  • Develop and test prototypes of devices they design
  • Analyze the test results and change the design or system as needed
  • Oversee the manufacturing process for the device

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirements for the diploma in mechanical engineering course are:

  • KCSE Mean Grade C- (Minus) or;
  • Pass in relevant Craft Certificate at Level II;
  • Equivalent qualification approved by KNEC.
