This diploma in water technology course, imparts skills that help in protecting drinking water quality, safeguarding water resources and ensuring the sustainability of the water supplies that are crucial to public health and the environment.

Overview

Water sustains life. A growing world population and climate change are set to bring about the need to increase water supplies. By pursuing a diploma in water technology, you can help enhance and sustain our precious water supplies.

The syllabus has been developed on a competency-based approach so that the trainee is able to have knowledge and skills in water resources technology and management. This programme is intended to impart skills, knowledge and attitudes that the trainee will apply in water resources management

This course provides training in the development of new and existing water sources. Students focus on ground and surface water sources as they relate to the way drinking water is treated and distributed. Areas of study include:

  • basic water supply hydrology;
  • groundwater sources;
  • surface water sources;
  • emergency and alternate water sources;
  • source water conservation;
  • source water quality;
  • source water protection.

Students are prepared to operate and maintain water and wastewater treatment, distribution, re-use, and disposal facilities, as well as monitor source water quality.
You’ll get your hands wet learning how chemistry, microbiology, mathematics, mechanical and electrical systems, instrumentation and treatment technologies are applied in the water industry.
You will study environmental law, occupational health and safety, communications, and utility management.

Objectives

This diploma in water technology course, imparts skills that help in protecting drinking water quality, safeguarding water resources and ensuring the sustainability of the water supplies that are crucial to public health and the environment.

A water technology technician should have a thorough knowledge of the techniques, trade science and technology. In addition, the technician should have grounding in supervisory procedures. Thus the objectives of the water technology course is to:

  • Develop skills that will be responsive to the country’s manpower requirements at the middle level in the surface water and groundwater resources.
  • Acquire necessary academic base for further training and contribute to the development and science and technology.
  • Prepare the student so that they can enter the field of water resources with confidence.
  • Impart adequate skills that will enable the student either to operate as a water resources technician or to perform middle-level supervisory functions.
  • Extend the scope of understanding of the environment of water resources and the society in general.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirements for the diploma in water technology course are:-

  • Pass in relevant Craft Course, or;
  • KCSE Mean Grade C- (Minus), or;
  • Equivalent qualification approved by KNEC.
