About Medical Laboratory Technology programme

Medical laboratory technology is the branch of medical science responsible for performing laboratory investigations relating to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

Medical laboratory technicians play an important role in the prevention and diagnosis of diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and AIDS. Medical lab technicians work under the supervision of a physician, lab manager or medical technologist and perform laboratory tests on specimens.

The tests that lab techs conduct assist doctors in verifying the causes of an illness, making medical decisions and determining treatment options. Some of the areas in which medical lab technicians may specialize include:

  • Microbiology
  • Hematology
  • Blood banking
  • Immunology
  • Clinical chemistry
  • Molecular biology
  • Cytotechnology

The role of a medical laboratory technician include:

  • to collect, process, and analyze specimens.
  • perform lab procedures and maintain instruments.

Objectives of Medical Laboratory Technology

This medical laboratory technology program trains students in all areas of the clinical laboratory procedures, students will learn the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Graduates of the program will be eligible to apply to the qualifications for medical laboratory technicians’ work.

Entry requirements for Medical Laboratory Technology

The Minimum Entry Requirements is a minimum of KCSE Mean Grade C (Plain) with the following cluster requirements:

  • Minimum of C in either Maths or Physics
  • Minimum of C in either English or Kiswahili
  • Minimum of C in Biology

The duration for the course is two (2) years which includes a compulsory industrial attachment.

This program is examined by KNEC at the end of the two years training period.
